As the time to observe advent comes around, I have found myself looking at a few of the different names of Jesus we see in the Scriptures. There are many names, such as Alpha and Omega, Light of the World, and Savior. One that has recently stood out to me is Lamb of God. The symbolism of the lamb relates back to the Old Testament, when the Israelites used the blood of a lamb to cover their doorpost so that God would pass over their household and save them during the plagues. A spotless lamb to symbolize the baby that would be born without blemish, to take on the sins of the world.
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, ‘Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!’
John 1:29
It can easily feel as though we are hurrying this season to spend time with loved ones, grab the perfect gift, and rest from our hectic lives. While all of these goals have benefits, I would love to encourage you to take the time to sit in reverence of God sending His son for all of mankind. One simple way to do this is to read one chapter from Luke a day, leading up to Christmas day. These 24 chapters bring you through the story of Christ’s life, including the story of His birth, ministry, death, and the resurrection. Take the time during this busy season to rest in what God has done for us, praising Him for His undeserved mercy and grace, as we celebrate the Christmas story of Christ – the spotless Lamb of God, sacrificing Himself for His beloved children.
