Hurricane Helene was a category 4 storm that tore through multiple states on September 26-27 and generated tornados, knocked out power, stranded people in flood waters, and caused much damage and destruction. Southwest Virginia was severely impacted.

SBCV Disaster Relief is working alongside the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM). A feeding team is on-site providing meals. The first mud-out team is scheduled to start work on Sunday, October 6. A second mud-out team begins October 13. Flood recovery and chainsaw teams will also be needed.

FAQs about Disaster Relief Responses to Helene and Milton

What items should we collect to send to Southwest Virginia or North Carolina?

SBCV churches have been very active and generous in collecting items for those impacted. However, if you haven’t started collecting or purchasing items yet, please hold off.

As of October 11, 2024, there are no collection centers receiving donations. Instead, consider making a financial contribution or purchase gift cards that DR volunteers can distribute to families in need.

I want to help. How can I get involved?

SBCV DR is actively responding in Southwest Virginia, with teams scheduled to work through October 26th. We will issue additional callouts as needed when more requests for assistance are received. Visit sbcv.org/callouts for current opportunities.

Please note that all volunteers must be trained and have a clear background check to receive their badge, shirt, and hat. Trained volunteers will receive timely updates on upcoming callouts.

I live nearby and want to help for a day, but I don’t need accommodations. Can I still participate?

Yes! You can help without staying overnight. Email us at sbcv-response@sbcv.org with your name, church name, and availability, and someone will get back to you.

Do I need to bring my own tools?

For Disaster Relief deployments, tools are provided. For Rebuild trips, bringing personal tools is optional—most tools will be available on our trailer. For specific tool-related questions, contact us at disasterrelief@sbcv.org after signing up for a callout.

Can my church host a Disaster Relief training?

Absolutely. Learn more and register your church as a host for training.

How long will you be serving those impacted by Hurricane Helene?

We will continue serving as long as we have volunteers available to deploy.

Why aren’t you sending groups to North Carolina?

Our priority is to assist those in Virginia first. Once the work in Virginia is complete, we will extend callouts to other areas in need, including North Carolina.

Will you be rebuilding homes damaged by Helene’s floods?

Yes. After the Recovery phase, we will begin the Rebuilding phase. These trips are scheduled for the coming months and into 2025. Visit sbcv.org/callouts for future dates, or sign up for the Rebuild email list.

I have limited physical abilities. Can I still help?

Yes! DR has roles for all abilities, and volunteers work at their own pace. Attend a training session to explore how you can contribute. Roles include chaplains, debris removal, mud-out teams, and cooks for both mass feeding and volunteer teams. If you cannot deploy, consider joining our prayer support team, where you’ll receive a roster to pray for volunteers by name. No DR training is required for prayer support.  You can sign up to pray for upcoming deployments at sbcv.org/callouts.  You can also donate to SBCV Relief Ministries.

Are there age restrictions for DR workers?

Yes. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old to deploy. Younger individuals can attend training, but they won’t be eligible for credentialing or deployment until they turn 18.

We encourage you to pray, give, and prepare to go.

Please Pray

Pray for each community affected, the churches, their staffs, the volunteers as they respond and their leadership as they plan and lead.

Please Prepare

The SBC Disaster Relief is the third largest arm in the U.S. to respond to natural disasters. In order to go with teams, you must be trained (credentialed).

  • If your credentials have expired, you may update credentials online.
  • New volunteers need to complete online training and can have their credentials expedited to be able to respond to these immediate needs.
